More Bus Porn … An Epoch of Incredulity.

What do you do if you host a bus meet and no one shows up?  The Bus Meet that never was.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,” I always think of that quote from a Tale of Two Cities when I hear the word Pahrump.

An Epoch of Incredulity

As some folks seem to get a little touchy when it comes to observations and/or opinions, I am going to put this here.  This is my site, and therefore, you do not have to use a telephone number to state your case, whatever it may be.

We on the other hand, still welcome any and all comments.

The bus meet in Pahrump, Nevada was to me a rousing success, I thought it was just swell.  I did however have moments of disappointment and personal despair, when I observed all the drop-dead gorgeous coaches in attendance, and then I looked at mine.

Bus meets will do that to you.

But like I said, “I thought it went well and ended on a good note, there was talk of getting together next year in Cody, Wyoming, and anticipation of another good time, was in the air.  A feeling shared by all.  At that point, it would have been best to accept what happened and move on, leave on a positive note.

The host however, told me that night, that he was disappointed in the numbers, that it should have been more, he wanted more.  That he was somewhat disappointed that it did not happen in the manner or fashion he desired.  Clearly a violation of the first rule of life:  “He who expects nothing, is seldom disappointed.”  You want to be unhappy the rest of your life?  Set your goals so impossibly high, that you never achieve them.  That should just about do it for most folks.

Now here is the sad part, in order to rise to the level of success desired, a “second bus meet” is announced the next day to be held in Branson, Missouri, some months down the line.  The second meet attracts even less, only 4 coaches and one backs out unexpectedly.  This meet is cancelled “because of the extreme weather” in the mid-section of the country.

Uh huh sure.

Entrepreneurs (try and spell that one) appear to disproportionately suffer from mental health problems.  Which could be true, most folks who own and operate old buses, are often referred to as “Nuts” (Man I truly hate that expression … Bus Nuts).

Who knows, maybe they are … plus a little manic depressive, ADD, PTSD, or just plain old fashioned garden variety depressed sprinkled in for good measure.  In a recent California study, 49% of entrepreneurs surveyed reported at least one mental health pre-condition, such as ADHD, depression or Bipolar disorder, now compare this with 32% of the group which were found to be normal.

Like I said in the beginning:  It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,  How sad a testament in life is it, to want something so badly, that you would sacrifice good friends, in order to achieve a whisper of fame.

The Pahrump Bus Meet illustrated for me personally quite a few things, hard to nail it down to just one item.  But for me, number one would be:  “It is not easy being an Entrepreneur these days.”

Another lesson learned is that you must always try and pull something good out of the ashes if you can.  Learn from it and try to make it work in the future to your advantage.  If it works, you are ahead of the game, if it falls flat on its face, you can always blame it on the weather.
