Money Saving Tips

Don … Here are the tips I talked about awhile back.  Use them if you like.. James

1. Your dad was right, if you’re not in the room the light should be out. Burning lights that no one is using not only wastes the electricity used by the bulb, but makes your air conditioner work harder to cool the air the bulb heats up. Ditto for TV sets.

2. Where possible, replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. Although they cost a little more initially, they last for years and use about ¼ of the amount of electricity incandescent bulbs do.

3. Keep your freezer full. When you open the door all the cold air leaves and has to be re-cooled after it is closed. Reducing the volume of air reduces the work your freezer has to do. Filling up empty spaces even with such things as old milk cartons filled with water is efficient and provides great coolers for ice chests, and during power outages, your refrigerator.

4. Turn your thermostat up in the summer months. A couple of degrees can make a lot of difference on your bill. If it begins to feel a little warm between times you’re A/C comes on, place a fan in the room where you are and let it circulate the air. It feels good and seriously reduces electricity usage. Do the reverse in winter. Long sleeves or a sweater will keep you comfortable.

5. Build and use a solar powered clothes dryer. Parts needed: rope, clothespins, two trees. Total cost–$4.36. If trees are not available, posts will work just as well, but may run up the cost by a few dollars. Your grandma probably used a clothesline, but that is so 20th century.

6. During hot weather close the shades/curtains on sides of the house where the sun is shining in. The same solar power that runs your new dryer will also put heat in your home. During cold weather, put the sun to work in your home by opening the shades/curtains and letting the sun do what it does best.

7. Have you’re A/C serviced once a year. Removing all the stuff it collected from the air will allow air to flow more freely and make it more efficient. In Oklahoma, it’s cottonwood seeds that plug it up. The money spent on a serviceman will be made back pretty quickly and will extend the life of you’re A/C unit.

8. Change you’re air conditioner/heating unit’s filter regularly. Same results as number 7.

9. Keep vegetation from around your outside A/C unit. Same results as number 7.

10. Plant a deciduous tree on the west side of your house if possible. During the summer the leaves will shade your home from the heating rays of the sun. In winter, the leaves will be gone and let the sun shine through.

11. If you don’t have double pane windows, have storm windows installed. They are great at reducing heating/cooling loss by creating a dead air space between the panes of glass, much like a thermos works. But remember, they only work if they are closed. (Kids have a really hard time with this one.)

12. On nice days or nights when the weather is cooperating, turn off the A/C and let mother nature provide the cooling along with fresh oxygen for no additional charge. When going back to A/C, don’t forget to close the storm windows!

13. Check the insulation in your attic. The most efficient use of insulation is in your attic. Remember high school science? Warm air rises, and your warm air will too, going right on through to your attic space where it won’t help you at all. Meanwhile, your heating unit will be running more, thus using more energy and decreasing the life of the heating unit. Attic insulation usually pays for itself in one winter.

14. Caulk around your windows and outside doors. Caulking is cheap and will stop those drafts that run your bill up and give your kids the sniffles..

15. Check the thermostat on your hot water tank. Heating water too hot not only costs extra money, it can be dangerous to small kids.

Here is one more tip. It won’t save you money, but your dog will appreciate it during the hot months. Place a small pan below the pipe where your air conditioner’s condensation drips out. It will fill quickly and overrun, thus keeping cool fresh water for your dog during the heat of the day while you may be away.

Doing these things will make a sizeable reduction in your energy bills and are earth-friendly. Many cost very little or nothing. The savings derived from doing them can fund the ones that cost more. Becoming energy efficient is not an event, it’s a process.

Thanks James, there are certainly some good items in there.

This came to me via Email out of Kansas City, Kansas from our friend John.

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging, wild-eyed liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought for Pure Food and Drug laws to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal, socialist union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some whining, cry baby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

Now its noon time. Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FDIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was well educated and earned more money over his lifetime than he otherwise would.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home.

His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.

Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

Black N White

Here is a “comment” especially for you.  People have addressed it over and over, a lot of people, infinitely smarter than myself.  But YOU believe we need to have a conversation about race in America?

Fair enough.

But this time, it has to be a two-way conversation. White America needs to be heard from, not just lectured to. This time, the Silent Majority needs to have its convictions, grievances and demands heard. And among them are these:

First, America has been the best country on earth for black people.  It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.

This so-called Reverend Wright that was in the mainstream awhile back, ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.

Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the ’60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the black American community into the mainstream.

Governments, businesses and colleges have engaged in discrimination against white folks — with affirmative action, contract set-asides and quotas — to advance black applicants over white applicants.  Churches, foundations, civic groups, schools and individuals all over America have donated time and money to support soup kitchens, adult education, day care, retirement and nursing homes for blacks.

We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude??

The black community talks about new ‘ladders of opportunity’ for blacks.  Go to Altoona and Johnstown, and ask the white kids in Catholic schools how many were visited lately by Ivy League recruiters handing out scholarships for ‘deserving’ white kids.

After Katrina almost daily we were pounded with “how the government didn’t do a thing for Chocolate America” (New Orleans Mayor) but what did you hear out of Iowa and the heartland when floods took their homes, farms jobs and factories?

Nothing, they reached down and grabbed their bootstraps and got back to business.

Is white America really responsible for the fact that the crime and incarceration rates for Black Americans are seven times those of white America? Is it really white America’s fault that illegitimacy in the Black American community has hit 70 percent and the black dropout rate from high schools in some cities has reached 50 percent?

Is that the fault of white America or, first and foremost, a failure of the black community itself?

As for racism, its ugliest manifestation is in interracial crime, and especially interracial crimes of violence. Are you aware that while white criminals choose black victims 3 percent of the time, black criminals choose white victims 45 percent of the time?

Are you aware that black-on-white rapes are 100 times more common than the reverse, that black-on-white robberies were 139 times as common in the first three years of this decade as the reverse?

We have all heard ad nauseam from the Rev. Al Sharpton about Tawana Brawley, the Duke rape case and Jena. And all turned out to be hoaxes. But about the epidemic of black assaults on whites that are real, we hear nothing.  We won’t even try and address Jesse Jackson, like the rest of the country, your community seems to be suffering a leadership problem too.

Sorry, some of us have heard it all before, about 40 years and 40 trillion tax dollars ago. Racism in this country will never cease, until there is a change of heart AND mind.  Equality for the masses is never going to be accomplished by spewing the same old tired rhetoric over and over. Next time you want to come here and try and spread your particular brand of trash, it might behoove you to check your “sorry attitude” at the door.

This is an adult site.

Lamm On Imigration

just Passing it along, this is from a speech the Governor of Colorado gave.

American Suicide …Very sobering Wherever you stand, please take the time to read this; a great deal of it is appropriate for the time we are living in.

We know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado. In that context his thoughts are particularly poignant. Last week there was an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington , DC , filled to capacity by many of America’s finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his latest book, “Mexifornia,” explaining how immigration – both legal and illegal was destroying the entire state of California. He said it would march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream.

Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America

The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States . He said, “If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then let’s destroy America . It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and that ‘An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide.'”

“Here is how they do it,” Lamm said:

” First, to destroy America , turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country. History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: ‘The histories of bilingual and bicultural societies that do not assimilate are histories o f turmoil, tension, and tragedy.’ Canada , Belgium , Malaysia , and Lebanon all face crises of national  existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria s uppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, Corsicans and Muslims.”

Lamm went on:

” Second, to destroy America , invent ‘multiculturalism’ and encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal; that there are no cultural differences. Make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds/SPAN

” Third, we could make the United States an ‘Hispanic Quebec’ without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: ‘The apparent success of our own multi-ethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentrism and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together.’ Lamm said, “I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural subgroups li ving in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities.”

“Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school.”

” My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of ‘Victim.’ I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority platoon.”

” My sixth plan for America’s downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress differences rather than similarities. Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other – that is, when they are not killing each other. A diverse, peaceful , or stable society is against most historical precepts. People undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The G reeks believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common language and literature; and they worshipped the same gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic games. A common enemy, Persia , threatened their l ib erty. Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors: local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell. “E. Pluribus Unum” — >From many, one. In that historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the ‘pluribus’ instead of the ‘Unum,’we will ” Balkanize ” America as surely as Kosovo. ‘

” Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits. Make it taboo to talk about anything against the cult of ‘diversity.’ I would find a word similar to ‘heretic’ in the 16th century – that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like ‘racist’ or ‘xenophobe’ halt discussion and debate. Having made America a bilingual /bicultural country, having established multi-cultism, having the large foundations fund the doc- trine of ‘Victim,’ I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America , it must always be good. I would make every individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact of millions of them.”

In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally he said, “Lastly, I would censor Victor Hanson Davis’s book ‘Mexifornia.’ His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to destroy America . If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don’t read that book.”

There was no applause. A chilling fear quietly rose like an ominous cloud above every attendee at the conference. Every American in that room knew that everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively across the United States today. Discussion is being suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the foundation of our educational system and national cohesiveness. Even barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing as we celebrate ‘diversity.’ American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations create a Third World in America Take note of California and other states. To date, ten million illegal aliens and growing fast. It is reminiscent of George Orwell’s book “1984.” In that story, three slogans are engird in the Ministry of Truth buil ding: “War is peace,” “Freedom is slavery,” and “Ignorance is strength.”

Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on everyone at the conference that our nation and the future of this great democracy is deeply in trouble and worsening fast. If we don’t get this immigration monster stopped within three years, it will rage like a California wildfire and destroy everything in its path, especially The American Dream.

Had Enough?

Passing it along if you haven’t seen it yet. Not sure about the authenticity but right on the money in my opinion. Lee Iaccoca, the man who rescued Chrysler Corporation from its death throes. He’s now 82 years old and has new book, and here are some excerpts:

‘Am I the only guy in this country who’s fed up with what’s happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We’ve got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we’ve got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can’t even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, ‘Stay the course’

Stay the course? You’ve got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned ‘Titanic‘. I’ll give you a sound bite: ‘Throw all the bums out!’

You might think I’m getting senile, that I’ve gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore.

The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we’re fiddling in Iraq , the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving ‘pom-poms’ instead of asking hard questions. That’s not the promise of the ‘ America ‘ my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for.

I’ve had enough. How about you?

I’ll go a step further. You can’t call yourself a patriot if you’re not outraged. This is a fight I’m ready and willing to have. The Biggest ‘C’ is Crisis! (Iacocca elaborates on nine C’s of leadership, crisis being the first.)

Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It’s easy to sit there with your feet up on the desk and talk theory. Or send someone else’s kids off to war when you’ve never seen a battlefield yourself. It’s another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.

On September 11, 2001 , we needed a strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A Hell of a Mess So here’s where we stand. We’re immersed in a bloody war with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving. We’re running the biggest deficit in the history of the country. We’re losing the manufacturing edge to Asia , while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs. Gas prices are skyrocketing, and nobody in power has a coherent energy policy. Our schools are in trouble. Our borders are like sieves. The middle class is being squeezed every which way. These are times that cry out for leadership.

But when you look around, you’ve got to ask: ‘Where have all the leaders gone?’ Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point.

Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo? We’ve spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened.

Name me one leader who emerged from the crisis of Hurricane Katrina. Congress has yet to spend a single day evaluating the response to the hurricane, or demanding accountability for the decisions that were made in the crucial hours after the storm.

Everyone’s hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping it doesn’t happen again. Now, that’s just crazy. Storms happen. Deal with it. Make a plan . Figure out what you’re going to do the next time.

Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when ‘The Big Three’ referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, what are we going to do about it?

Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debt, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our country
and milking the middle class dry.

I have news for the gang in Congress. We didn’t elect you to sit on your asses and do nothing and remain silent while our democracy is being hijacked and our greatness is being replaced with mediocrity. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on Fox News will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don’t you guys show some spine for a change?

Had Enough?

Hey, I’m not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here. I’m trying to light a fire. I’m speaking out because I have hope I believe in America. In my lifetime I’ve had the privilege of living through some of America’s greatest moments. I’ve also experienced some of our worst crises: the ‘Great Depression‘, ‘World War II‘, the ‘Korean War‘, the ‘Kennedy Assassination’, the ‘Vietnam War‘, the 1970s oil crisis, and the struggles of recent years culminating with 9/11.

If I’ve learned one thing, it’s this: ‘You don’t get anywhere by standing on the sidelines waiting for somebody else to take action. Whether it’s building a better car or building a better future for our children, we all have a role to play. That’s the challenge I’m raising in this book. It’s a call to ‘Action’ for people who, like me, believe in America . It’s not too late, but it’s getting pretty close. So let’s shake off the crap and go to work.

Let’s tell ’em all we’ve had enough.’

Thanks Art in Reno, Nevada.
