Norman Is Not Funny

“Why is it no one is telling anyone jokes anymore, has the country disintegrated into such a morass of doom and gloom, that no one seems to want to share a good amusing story or joke with each other?”

YokoRobert Redford has a movie called  “A River Runs Thru It.”  In the movie there is a scene where the female lead looks to Brad Pitt and says to him, “Norman is not funny.”  Which is an amusing scene, but in all reality, I suppose you would have to see the movie first to appreciate it.

Out of all the movies my wife has seen in her lifetime, this one scene, seems to resonate with her.  I have not a clue as to why, but she will look at me when I attempt to share something amusing with her, or tell her a joke.

And her reply, is always the same …. “Norman is not funny.”

Now my wife is Chinese and very funny, in her own way.  She will say stuff all the time, that I find amusing as all get out.  We were for example, traveling thru the Panhandle of Oklahoma on vacation, where coincidentally there thrives a very large population of Antelope.  Somewhere west of a little place called Guymon, Oklahoma, traveling down the highway at 65 mph an antelope came up out of the bar ditch and literally leaped over the hood of our automobile!

I was at the very least, shocked and amazed.

My wife looked at me and said:  “What is he doing out here running wild like that, he could hurt someone!”  Now at that juncture of time, it would have not only been appropriate but very politically correct to interject “Norman is not funny” into the conversation.  I on the other hand chose to reply with …. “Uh, he LIVES HERE that is why.”

Why?  Because I don’t like eating tuna fish sandwiches day after day when she finds me not so funny.

Which brings me to this.  Why is it no one is telling anyone jokes anymore, has the country disintegrated into such a morass of doom and gloom, that no one seems to want to share a good amusing story or joke with each other?

When times are good, folks tell jokes, when times are bad … well, you know.  The bible says that “laughter doth the heart good” which means you are a Happy Kamper when you are laughing and quite possibly a back-seat Baptist if you live in Oklahoma.

Here is something else to consider.  It takes a lot of muscles in your face to frown, it only takes a few to smile … I am basically lazy when it comes to this crossroads of my life.  I am going to smile, I am going to grin, she is going to wonder what it is that I have been up to and when I dutifully try to explain it to her … She will simply say … “That not funny.”

Just this past week, I came into the kitchen and she said, “Where have you been?” and I said, “McDonalds.”  She then said, “Why you go there, that is not good for you, nothing healthy.” and I said, “They have a new Value Meal, and I wanted to try it.”

My wife then says to me, “A new value meal.  What is it called?” and I said, “It is called the Obammer.  You order anything on the menu that you want and the guy behind you has to pay for it.”

It is not easy being Norman, but someone has to do it.

See you at the water cooler.

Engine Detail 2012

Although my engine and transmission are relatively new (under sixty-thousand miles total) they have been looking really tired and sad here of late.  So I decided to take some time and a little money (less than fifty bucks) and detail it out a little bit.  First order of the day was to pull it out of the shop and put the power-washer to it, try and get as much grease and road grime as I could off of the motor and the surrounding surfaces.

One really nice feature of the Eagle, is they were designed with free and open access to a great many of the area’s that a guy needs to get into.  That is a plus.  Power-washing like most other “non fun bus adventures” is nasty and only done every now and then (If you are smarter than the average monkey) and takes about 45 minutes to complete, start to finish.

Went by AutoZone for some heat resistant paint, this is what I painted the motor with and the exhaust system.  After it dried, I went back over it with Chrome Paint that I picked up at Lowe’s (this would be Rustoleum enamel paint).  Figuring the base coat (heat resistant paint) would take the heat, and then the upper coat (chrome) would be okay.  I don’t know if this will work, but it should be clearly visible or evident within 100 miles or so.

A liberal application of AmourAll and a rub down on the piping and hoses comes next, and areas that still need attention get some more.  A camera is a handy tool for a project like this, you can take some shots of it and then later download it to the computer and get a good close up birds-eye view of everything.  The camera is very good at pointing out areas that you somehow missed (and you will miss them trust me).

The last item on the agenda is to add two led strips so that if the case should arise late at night, you would have some light to work with.  I added two 12″ LED lights from United Pacific to the engine compartment.  One high and one low, lights it up rather nicely.

As I pointed out earlier, it is not new, but it sure looks a lot better.  Functional and pretty, the best of two worlds.

Genset Workover

It has been awhile since I paid any attention to the area holding the generator, so I have spent a week or two working it up and changing it around a little.  First order of the day was to pull the doors, take them over to the workbench area and bring them back up to standards.  This entails a lot of wire brushing, prepping and then repainting.  Most of the old sound proofing was removed at this time, and so far, I have not located a suitable replacement for it.  It is not often easy finding replacement parts for a twenty-nine year old bus.

Doors are nasty, they take a lot of work to clean up.  As with most everything I do concerning the bus, this was labor intensive and it took a lot of my time, but I feel the end results justify the effort put forth.  Surprisingly, not a lot of expense associated with it, just time.  But it does make all the difference in the world and it looks good, so I guess it is all worth it.

Once the doors were re-worked and ready to go, it was time for the genset area.  I could not find a suitable mix for the Kubota generator, and ended up mixing my own paint to do the job.  Kubota’s are something like a greenish/blue color stock (see first picture above).  Ours is now a sort of custom mixed Royal Blue, close but no cigar.  It might not be kosher, but it gave it all a nice appearance.

And after all, it is like most bus owners will be quick to tell you … “the only person that has to worry about it is myself, and if it pleases me, then it is good to go.”

It is amazing the difference that can be had with just a little elbow grease, patience and store bought paint from the local hardware store.
